Designing Arabic-first apps: lessons from right-to-left

Translating an English app at the end never feels right. Here is how we design apps that feel native in both languages.

Start right-to-left from day one

Layouts, navigation, icons and animations all need to mirror for Arabic. Planning this from the first screen avoids costly redesigns later and makes the app feel natural to Arabic speakers.

Typography matters

Arabic and Latin scripts have different heights and rhythms. Choosing typefaces that pair well, and giving Arabic text enough space, makes the whole app easier to read.

Numbers, dates and currencies

Users expect local formats, from Hijri dates to dirham and riyal amounts. Getting these details right builds trust immediately.

Test with real users

Nothing replaces testing with people in your market. Small changes in wording and flow make a big difference to how an app is received.
